The Surprising Effects the Keto Diet Can Have on Your Skin
https://ift.tt/2AqZZ3R The ketogenic diet has become more mainstream over the past year thanks to celebrity endorsements from stars like Halle Berry, to the amazing before and after weight-loss transformations. While there's still much to learn about the low-carb, high-fat diet and how it affects the body, experts have found that the benefits are greater than weight loss alone. Steve Phinney, MD, PhD, chief medical officer at Virta Health, told POPSUGAR, "Anecdotally, there are many stories of people having clearer skin, more energy, sharper cognition, and reduced symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. But the fact of the matter is, there is not yet any long term, peer-reviewed data that connects these improvements to nutritional ketosis." According to Dr. Phinney, "Inflammation is directly associated with conditions such as certain forms of acne and arthritis." Dr. Phinney expressed that it's very possible that reducing inflammation through nutritional ketosis could improve "a whole host of conditions" like acne. There are many variables that cause acne and if inflammation is what triggers your breakouts, an anti-inflammatory diet could help manage them. Anna Guanche, MD, board-certified dermatologist, founder of Bella Skin Institute in Calabasas, California said, "The keto diet and low-carb diets are helpful in making the skin stay pliable and supple." According to Dr. Guanche, a diet high in sugar can mimic diabetes, which then induces glycation, "where modified sugars attach themselves to the tissues [of the skin], causing hardening of arteries and other tissues." In turn, the skin becomes less pliable and more likely to wrinkle, she said. Dr. Guanche also busted a common myth about acne: that it's caused by foods like chocolate. "It's not the chocolate itself, but the sugar in chocolate and candies, that make people break out." Her advice for preventing breakouts: "Watch the sugar intake. Dairy products are variable - some breakout from them and some don't." If you aren't up to following the keto diet to prevent and manage breakouts, Dr. Guanche recommends using the Neutrogena Acne Free Wash ($10) and the Hydrance Light Hydrating Emulsion by Avene ($32). These products are best for people who have oily or acne-prone skin. Be sure to consult your dermatologist to develop a skincare routine that will work the best for you. The Worst Cheeses You Can Eat If You're Trying to Lose Weight, According to Dietitians
https://ift.tt/2AdBEye Let's just get one thing clear: there's no such thing as "good" or "bad" foods. Sure, there are some foods that are more nutritious for your body than others, but assigning moral value to foods is a recipe (pun intended!) for disordered eating and a poor relationship with food. That being said, there are some foods that can help you reach your goals faster. For example, there are some cheeses that can help you reach weight-loss goals because they are low-calorie, satiating, full of vitamins, or packed with protein. On the flip side, there are some cheeses that will add some extra calories and grams of saturated fat to your daily diet, which could stall your progress or even cause you to pack on the pounds. Keep in mind, this is mostly for people who are doing good old-fashioned calorie or macro counting, not keto, which encourages the consumption of full-fat dairy. That being said, here are the cheeses dietitians recommend avoiding if you're trying to lose weight. Health via POPSUGAR Fitness https://ift.tt/2mWxwLI July 26, 2018 at 06:20PM
This AC/DC Synchronized Swimming Routine Will Leave You Thunderstruck - Pun Intended
https://ift.tt/2Ak45dE Buckle up, reader, because we're about to take you on a wild ride down the highway to hell. In honor of good ol' #ThrowbackThursday, we're taking it way back to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where the Australian synchronized swimming team paid tribute to AC/DC with a legendary routine set to music by the rock band. We know, we know - 2012 was a whole six years ago, but their performance was so iconic, we simply couldn't resist bringing it back to the light of day. The talented eight-woman team began their routine by striking poses with the signature "rock on" hand gesture, and once the music began, they plunged into the pool (wearing swimsuits that had guitars on the back, might I add). They kicked their legs in sync, hurled their teammates into the air, and flipped underwater to the tune of AC/DC's hit songs "Thunderstruck" and "Back in Black," making for one unforgettable gig. If this doesn't motivate you to take your pool workouts to the next level, we're not quite sure what will. Watch the full video by clicking through to YouTube below, and then catch a glimpse of some impressive photos of the Australian athletes in motion.

Study: Healthier Eating Helps Psoriasis Symptoms
https://ift.tt/2LPxuhb THURSDAY, July 26, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- A study of more than 3,500 French psoriasis patients found that the healthier their diet, the less severe their symptoms. Specifically, the closer an individual adhered to the nutritious "Mediterranean" diet, the less onerous their psoriasis became. This was true regardless of whether or not the patient was obese, the French researchers noted. The Mediterranean diet is heavy on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, olive oil and nuts, and light on red meat, dairy and alcohol. It's long been recommended as "heart healthy" by groups such as the American Heart Association. Now, the new research bolsters the notion that the regimen might also help fight immune-system disorders such as psoriasis. One U.S. dermatologist agreed the idea has merit. "If this finding is confirmed by further studies, it would lead to a significant change in the way dermatologists manage psoriasis, as it would mean that even a patient who is not overweight could improve their psoriasis through dietary modifications," said Dr. Scott Flugman. He practices dermatology at Northwell Health's Huntington Hospital, in Huntington, N.Y. The new study was based on data from a nationwide health survey of citizens in France, involving almost 36,000 respondents. More than 3,500 of them had some form of psoriasis, said the team led by Dr. Celine Phan, of Henri Mondor University Hospital in Creteil, France. Besides asking psoriasis patients about the severity of their symptoms, the survey also gauged how closely they approached the ideal Mediterranean diet. Participants were divided into three groups -- a "bottom" third whose diets were furthest away from the Mediterranean diet, a middle third whose eating habits were moving closer to the diet, and a top third who were closest to the Mediterranean diet. The researchers adjusted their findings for age, exercise levels, obesity, smoking and other potential risk factors for psoriasis. Compared to people in the bottom third, those in the middle and top groups were 29 percent and 22 percent less likely to have severe symptoms, Phan's group found. A Trainer Says This Is How Many Squats You Should Do Each Day For a Bigger Booty
https://ift.tt/2LSBqxV Knowing the right exercises for a rounder backside is only half the battle, because you can't achieve booty gains without consistency. It also helps to know how often you should be working out your butt to see a difference in shape and size. Luckily, the answer is totally doable. Clarence Hairston, Ignite master trainer, NASM certified personal trainer, and AGM of Fitness at The Bay Club Company, told POPSUGAR that "women who are trying to build fuller glutes should start with 50 bodyweight squats a day." And you don't have to complete all 50 in one set. Clarence says you can split them up in ways that best fit your schedule. Once you've got the basics down, start adding weights and resistance, and try other squat variations and lower-body exercises. "Most importantly, don't stop challenging yourself and you'll see the results," he said. Lastly, just like any other body transformation, growing a bigger butt also requires changing your diet. You'll want to increase your caloric intake as well as your daily amount of protein. Combine all of these tips and continue to challenge your body as you go!
