The Planetary Diet Cuts Back on Red Meat—and the Benefits Go Far Beyond Weight Loss
http://bit.ly/2T6aC0R Some people diet to lose weight, others do it to get healthy, and some change their eating habits to help preserve the planet. Now there's a diet that experts believe can accomplish all three goals at the same time: the planetary health diet. Created by a group of 37 scientists as part of the EAT-Lancet Commission, the diet is designed to prevent 11 million deaths each year by cutting the risk of lethal chronic diseases. It's also supposed to feed 10 billion people (the estimated population of Earth by 2050) and not cause any environmental damage. RELATED: The 50 Best Weight Loss Foods of All Time "A large body of work has emerged on the environmental impacts of various diets, with most studies concluding that a diet rich in plant-based foods and with fewer animal source foods confers both improved health and environmental benefits," the report states. The scientists who created it say the planetary health diet is a "flexitarian" diet, which means it's largely plant-based but can also include small amounts of fish, meat, and dairy. Meat and dairy use the most natural resources and take the biggest toll on the planet, but the new diet doesn't completely eliminate either food group, which is good news for red meat fans. As for what else is in the plan: The main protein sources are nuts and legumes. Whole-grain carbs, fruit, and vegetables are also in it, with oil and sugar allowed in small quantities. RELATED: The 6 Biggest Keto Diet Mistakes "There's tremendous variety there," Walter Willett, MD, lead author of the paper that explains the new plan and a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told the BBC. "You can take those foods and put them together in thousands of different ways. We're not talking about a deprivation diet here, it is healthy eating that is flexible and enjoyable." If you already get most of your protein from plants, the planetary health diet may not call for any big shifts in your daily menu. Carnivores, however, will need to make some real changes—like cutting back to one burger per week. Depending on how much red meat a person already eats, the diet could lead to weight loss, since red meat can be high in calories and fat. So what do our favorite nutritionists think of this diet? "It's healthy because it's rich in produce, whole grains, and other plant-based foods and healthy oils, like olive oil. It limits meat and dairy, and that's a good thing, as most Americans eat too much red meat, which is not sustainable," Julie Upton, RD, tells Health. RELATED: 7 Health Benefits of a Mediterranean Diet Cynthia Sass, MS, RD, agrees. "In fact, you could even go more plant-based, and still meet your nutrient needs," she tells Health. The planetary health diet could be compared to the Mediterranean diet, Upton says, which has many research-backed health benefits, like increased heart health and better brain functioning. Sounds like you can't go wrong with this eating plan. I mean, saving lives, improving your own health, and the planet? It basically turns you into a superhero. 5 High-Protein Breakfasts to Jump-Start Your Weight Loss
http://bit.ly/2TUAOv7 Eating optimal amounts of the “right” protein at your first meal is one of the best ways to help jump-start weight loss and promote healthy behaviors all day long. Here’s why: Protein at breakfast has been shown to help reduce hunger and appetite, boost metabolism, provide lasting energy, conquer cravings for carbs, and help build and maintain muscle mass. My breakfast MVPs—most valuable proteins—to help set you up for weight loss success are eggs, low-fat yogurt, milk (cow’s milk and some plant-based varieties), and cottage cheese. Since these foods tend to be breakfast favorites already, adding more protein early in your day may be one of the easiest ways to lose weight. RELATED: The 50 Best Weight Loss Foods of All Time Here's what the science says: One study reported in the International Journal of Obesity discovered that participants who ate an egg breakfast compared to a bagel breakfast lost 65% more weight and saw a 34% greater reduction in waist circumference. Another study discovered that when women doubled their daily protein intake from 15% of their daily calorie intake to 30%, they consumed an average of 441 fewer calories per day—and shed an average of about 11 pounds over the course of 12 weeks. Ready to rev your metabolism before your first morning meeting? Below is a week’s worth of protein-packed breakfasts with at least 20 grams protein and fewer than 400 calories to help keep your appetite and daily calories in check. RELATED: 13 High-Protein Breakfast Recipes and Ideas Egg and veggie scrambleEggs are the gold standard for high-quality protein, with 6 grams of protein per large egg. Several studies show that an egg-based breakfast—compared to a carb-rich first meal—helps reduce overall daily calories, keeps you fuller longer, and reduces cravings for carbs. Make a satisfying and balanced morning meal with one whole egg plus two egg whites scrambled with your favorite veggies (like mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and spinach or arugula) with a toasted whole-grain English muffin. Cottage cheese and fruit parfaitCottage cheese is one of the best sources of leucine, the amino acid that helps build and maintain muscle mass. Enjoy a cup of low-fat cottage cheese with one cup fresh berries, pineapple, or pear slices and top with a sprinkle of chopped nuts or granola for texture. Choco-nana-chia smoothieBlend one cup pea or soy protein non-dairy milk, one banana, one tablespoon vanilla or chocolate protein powder, and one tablespoon of chia seeds until you've reached your desired consistency. RELATED: 6 Keto Smoothies That Will Keep You Full for Hours Breakfast egg, ham, and veggie burritoScramble two whole eggs and one egg white with one slice of Canadian bacon, chopped. Add chopped spinach, chopped bell pepper, and salsa. Serve in a six-inch corn or whole-grain tortilla. Yogurt, oat, and berry breakfast bowlGreek yogurt has a great protein-to-calorie ratio, making it an ally when trying to tone up. Whole grain oats provide up to 5 grams of protein per cup, and the fiber in oats helps trigger feelings of fullness. Try one cup cooked oatmeal topped with ¾ cup nonfat or low-fat plain Greek yogurt with one cup fresh or frozen (no added sugar) berries. There's Only a 5-Pound Difference In These Two Photos of Fitness Influencer Anna Victoria From 11 Years Apart
http://bit.ly/2B18kcn In 11 years, Anna Victoria completely transformed her body — and she has the pictures to prove it. But incredibly, her weight has only shifted by 5 lbs. The fitness influencer, 30, joined in on the popular ten year challenge, which has social media users sharing photos of themselves now and a decade earlier. Victoria cheated a little and shared a photo from 11 years earlier, but it was worth it to show how much she’s changed. RELATED: This Influencer Looks Like She Lost Weight After 2 Years of Training—but the Scale Stayed the Same “Does anyone else look back and feel like periods of time in your life were another life entirely?” she asked on Instagram. Victoria said that in the photo from 2007, where she’s dressed in a bikini and holding up a friend for a keg stand, she wasn’t healthy. “Before: partied (clearly), ate only fast food, wouldn’t step foot in a gym, drank almost no water, had trouble sleeping, had digestive and GI issues from poor eating habits,” she wrote. RELATED: 5 Signs You’re Getting Fitter—Even If the Scale Hasn't Budged RELATED: 10 Things I Learned During My Body Transformation Now Victoria’s life is the polar opposite. “After: enjoys a glass of wine or two here and there, eats 80/20, works out for my mental, emotional and physical health, drinks 3-4 liters of water a day, prioritizes sleep, no more digestive and GI issues (except for when I have huge cheat meals).” Victoria said that those changes between 2007 and 2018 — things she now preaches to her 1.3 million followers — changed her life, even if they didn’t make much of a difference on the scale. “While I didn’t have a ton of weight to lose, [and] my transformation was largely health focused, I am also proud of the physical change. And there’s only a 5 lb difference between these two photos!” she said. “But one thing I want to add and make clear is despite the differences between these two photos, I still loved myself in the 2007 photo. No matter how much I did or didn’t weigh, I never let it phase me and question my worth.” Victoria said that the same is true for her followers, especially if they’re comparing themselves to old photos. “YOU deserve to love yourself now, no matter where you are in your journey, even if you haven’t even started,” she said. “Please know that now and always.” To get our top stories delivered to your inbox, sign up for the Healthy Living newsletter Weight Loss via Weight Loss - Health.com http://bit.ly/2GCRyFt January 17, 2019 at 11:43AM

3 Sweeteners You Can Actually Use on the Keto Diet
http://bit.ly/2FyurKa A keto-friendly sweetener sounds a bit like an oxymoron: Sweeteners are typically sugars, sugars are carbohydrates, and the ketogenic diet is very, very low in carbs . But the fact is, there are sweeteners out there with little to no carbs—and while the list below is short, stevia, monk fruit, and erythritol can all be a part of your ketogenic diet. SteviaIt’s a zero-calorie sweetener (with no carbohydrates or sugars) that’s about 50 to 350(!) times sweeter than sugar. You’ll see it on grocery shelves under brand names such as PureVia, Stevia in the Raw, and SweetLeaf, to name a few. Stevia is a popular choice because it’s considered natural, and several food regulatory authorities have deemed it safe. There isn’t enough research yet to determine whether it can help with curbing calories and weight loss, but if you're doing keto, stevia will help you keep your carbs in check. RELATED: Your Ultimate Keto Diet Grocery List Monk fruitAnother no-carb, no-sugar, no-calorie sweetener, monk fruit is said to be about 100 to 250 times sweeter than sugar and is sold by brands such as Monk Fruit in the Raw and PureLo. Like stevia, monk fruit can help you cut carbs, but it may not help you slash your total calorie intake. In one smaller study, men who drank a monk fruit- sweetened beverage didn’t eat less over the course of the day, or have much of an improvement in blood sugar spikes, compared to when they drank a sugar-sweetened beverage. RELATED: 10 Keto-Friendly Vegetables You Should Eat More Of ErythritolSlightly different from stevia and monk fruit, erythritol is technically a sugar alcohol, which means your body doesn’t fully absorb it. (This is why some sugar alcohols can cause gastrointestinal distress, though erythritol is said to be among the least bothersome of the sugar alcohols.) Erythritol has zero calories, and is about 70 to 80% as sweet as sugar. It does have 4 grams of carbohydrate per teaspoon, but its net carb count is zero, so it doesn't count towards your daily carb allowance on keto. One common erythritol-based sweetener brand--Swerve—explains that because their product doesn't raise blood sugar, its carbs are considered "non-impact." Recent research suggests that erythritol may be beneficial for people with diabetes: in animal models, the low-cal sweetener helped lower blood glucose spikes after eating a meal. RELATED: What Is 'Dirty Keto' and Should You Try It? A few caveats ...Just because a beverage or food contains one of these sweeteners doesn't mean the item is keto-friendly. Stevia, monk fruit, and erythritol are often found in foods and drinks that are labeled "sugar-free" or "low-sugar"; but those foods and drinks may contain other ingredients that contribute to your daily carbohydrate sum. So definitely make it a habit to check the nutrition facts on any packaged item you're considering. Also, while you might assume that replacing sugar with a low- or no-cal sweetener would help you cut back on your total daily calories, research suggests otherwise: Typically, people who replace sugar with a low- or no-calorie version at one meal make up for those calories later on in the day. Finally, it's worth noting that keto purists caution against permitting any of these sweeteners on the keto diet at all. That's because quite often these sweeteners pop up in foods and recipes that either taste sweet or are heavy in carbs. Those foods could stoke your appetite for other keto-unfriendly items, and set you up to cave to your cravings. And before you know it, you’ve derailed back to non-keto eating. But, on the flip side of the coin, sometimes indulging a tiny bit is what keeps you going on a strict dict. If that’s the case for you, go for it. Here’s How This Grandmother Lost 159 Lbs. at 56 Years Old
http://bit.ly/2SUSxCI For decades, Debbie Baker was resigned to living her life at 300 lbs. She had gained weight in college — she would down an entire pizza by herself late at night — and then added more after giving birth to her two daughters. As a kindergarten teacher, she spent her days with kids who left her too exhausted to move when she got home. “I would just take out a sleeve of saltine crackers and put butter on them, and I would eat that whole sleeve because I was tired and exhausted, and then I would wonder why my weight wouldn’t go anywhere,” Baker, 57, tells PEOPLE for the 2019 Half Their Size issue. RELATED: One Woman Inspired Her Family to Lose Weight Together—and They Dropped a Total of 487 Lbs. She had tried every diet imaginable, but any success only lasted a few weeks, and then her weight would go right back up. The years of yo-yo dieting left Baker with “very low self-esteem.” “I was always very negative about myself,” she says. “You walk into a place and you can feel the eyes. I knew what they were thinking: ‘What’s wrong with her, she needs to lose weight.’ “ RELATED: At 300 Lbs. This Woman Didn’t Know She Was Pregnant—and It Pushed Her to Lose Half Her Size And she was also accustomed to the 5-year-olds at school telling people, “My teacher is the fat one.” “The only person that never said anything was my husband,” she adds. “He just was always there for whatever decision I made — he was right behind me.” RELATED: The DASH Diet Is One of the Top Ranked Weight Loss Plans—Here's What It's All About Baker and her family lived in Ohio for years, but she had to move to Florida for an autoimmune disorder unrelated to her weight. Suddenly they were in a town where they didn’t know anyone, and it was there that she saw an ad for TOPS, or Take Off Pounds Sensibly, a weight loss support group. That gave her the idea to give it a shot. “I was like, ‘Well I don’t know anybody, so why not?’ “ she says. But the final straw came after she decided to throw her fast food leftovers in the yard for the birds — and a week later, they were still there. “The birds wouldn’t touch them,” she says. “I decided that if the birds aren’t eating them, then I shouldn’t either. And that’s when it all clicked. This is not healthy.” RELATED: This Woman Lost 312 Pounds—but the Real Change Happened After Her Loose Skin Was Removed Baker signed up for TOPS soon after, and immediately felt comfortable. The program is just a support group — members are expected to lose weight on their own through the diet plan of their choice — and she loved the community. Baker decided to cut her calories down to 1,500 a day, and started tracking her meals with MyFitnessPal. She also got a Fitbit and started by walking from her driveway to her neighbor’s, and she would add another driveway to her route each day. “At first I was hungry a lot,” she says. “My stomach would rumble and it was really hard, but I was determined.” And from past dieting experience, Baker knew that her eating habits had to be sustainable or she would give up, so she decided to give herself one day each week where she could eat what she wanted. “That way I don’t feel deprived, and I don’t binge.” And Baker’s plan immediately worked, along with the support and motivation from TOPS. “I walked in there and nobody said anything about my weight. They just all were very welcoming and warm, and then the next week I had lost four pounds and they’re all standing up and cheering,” she says. “I’ve been in it since 2014 and still, anytime anybody loses a quarter of a pound, we all stand up and cheer for them. That makes a difference to people to know that you’re not out there alone.” Baker hit her goal weight — 159 lbs. down — in July 2017, and is now the leader of her TOPS group. These days she’s doing things she never thought would be possible, like riding a bike, and is even preparing for a 30-mile bike ride in her area. The grandmother says that she feels like a new person. “I can really feel a difference,” she says. “I don’t sit still very often; I get up, I move around. I can chase my 3-year-old grandson around. It’s amazing how I feel. I can do anything.” Have you lost half your size? Share your story with PEOPLE at halftheirsize@people.com!
