Gene Simmons On Lifting, Hiking, and Why He's Never Done Drugs

Just Say No

I’ve never willingly been high or drunk in my life. Now, when I’m under a doctor’s care, they take me out. But when I’m awake and alive, I’ve never even had ajoint in my hand, much less in my mouth. No coke, no nothing. When somebody toasts somebody, I don’t want to insult anybody, so I may have a drop or two of champagne or whatever they have. I find it vile and disgusting, but that’s just me. I think everybody should live their life any way they want.

Walk Hard

These days I hike. It’s all aboutcardio and keeping your heart pumping. I go on five-milehikes up hills in the Santa Monica Mountains. No cellphone, no music. I just go. I’ve also got a decent-size house with three floors and no elevators. Anytime you want to get a cup of coffee, you’re forced to go up and down the stairs. Over the course of a year, I’m sure that’s miles.

In the Vault

When I hike, it’s a time for me to think-tank. My latest idea is the Vault Experience. It’s literally the largest box set of all time. It contains 150 unreleased tracks from 1966 to 2016. It’s about 38 pounds and three feet high. There are 10 CDs. There’s a Gene Simmons action figure. There are Kiss demos. It goes for $2,000. Now, here’s the crazy part: I’m going to hand-deliver the box sets to whoever buys them—at a party in their area. Nobody’s ever done this before, because it’s nuts.

Pumping Iron

Did I used tolift weights? Oh, yeah. We used to go to Gold’s Gym in Hollywood. I also used to do Tae Bo with Billy Blanks. All of it physically knocks you out. At different points in your life, it’s good to do different things. The younger you are, I’d recommend more weightlifting. As you get older, cardio is the main thing. Get out there and walk. And if you can jog a mile in six minutes, you’re doing great at any age.

Tongue-Tied

I was just born with a big one. I don’t know how else to say it. I was always the tallest in class. I remember in sixth grade, when ever we’d line up to do anything in school, I was always in the back of the line. There were these two girls in front of me, Stella and Irene. They’d go, “Hey, Gene, do that thing with your tongue.” I’d stick it out and wiggle it, and they’d giggle like turkeys about to get their heads chopped off. [Makes gobble sounds] Have I ever done exercises for my tongue? Well, sure. Every time. You can fill in the blanks.

Motivational Speaker

When I co-owned the LA Kiss, the Arena Football League team, I gave the players pep talks. I told them the tortoise won the race, not the hare. And that there’s no substitute for willpower and never giving up. There are smaller guys who beat the shit out of bigger guys because they’re more incentivized. I mean, if you said something about my mother, I don’t care if you hurt me, I’m going to take you out, bitch.

Rock On

At 68, I get up onstage with Kiss, the hardest-working band in show business, period. I carry 45 to 50 pounds of armor and studs and wear eight-inch platform heels. I love Jagger and McCartney, but if they got into my outfits, they’d pass out in the first song.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Demolishes Global Box Office Record With Epic Opening Weekend
Marvel Studios/Avengers: Infinity War

The dust has barely settled after Black Panther’s historic box office run, but Disney and Marvel Studios have already smashed records once again with Avengers: Infinity War.

In its opening weekend, Infinity War raked in an estimated $630 million worldwide. That makes it the biggest worldwide opening of all time, according to CNN. The Fate of the Furious held the previous record, bringing in $541 million globally last April.

[RELATED1]

The record figure undeniably impressive—especially considering the film has yet to open in China, the world’s second-largest movie market by box office revenue.

In addition to its global achievements, Infinity War broke records on the home front. It made an estimated $250 million domestically, sneaking past the $248 million that Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned back in 2015.

[RELATED2]

Longtime fans likely aren’t surprised by Infinity War’s box-office success, or its popularity with critics. (At the time of publishing, it’s earned an impressive 84% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes.) Since the first trailer, it’s been clear that Infinity War would deliver the explosive matchup between the Avengers and Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, that Marvel fans anticipated since the inaugural Avengers film.

Infinity War assembles more Marvel heroes than any other film, gathering the original Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, and more. The stacked cast and the long-awaited showdown were a recipe for box office success—and damn, did they deliver.

Catch Avengers: Infinity War in theaters now.

When Healthy Habit Becomes Passionless Routine

When Healthy Habit Becomes Passionless Routine

https://ift.tt/2FtWR45

Today, like every day, I hopped out of bed at the insistence of the alarm I strategically place across the room. Like every morning, I let my dogs out, then went to the kitchen and drank 16 ounces of cold water. I filled the dog bowls, let them in, and headed to my garage gym. There I did the same warm up I’ve done for years, finishing just as my wife entered, right on cue. She turned on the same general playlist that has been cycling for the past couple months. If I hear the words “if it’s meant to be, it’ll be, it’ll be, baby just let it be,” one more time, I may take that speaker and let it be shattered into pieces. Other than that, she has wonderful taste.

Barbell Shred - Build Lean Muscle. Get Strong. Shred Body Fat.

Where was I? Oh yes. I then proceeded to do the same general workout format I’ve followed since January. My routine gets me in and out in 35 minutes. Then I took a cold shower, did my 20 minutes of meditation and gratitude, and I cooked the same breakfast I’ve eaten for years, while listening to Best of the Herd with Colin Cowherd, as I do every day before work.

When Habit Smothers Fire

I’ve often lauded the essentiality of strong routines. I’m the guy who told you that:

Habits have been the foundation of health and productivity in my life. Nothing feels quite so good as creating a plan and then watching as it becomes clockwork, pulling me closer to my goals. Without

mastery of your habits

, health and fitness are virtually impossible in the modern world. Routines hardwire patterns that eliminate the mental effort of making arbitrary choices and increase productivity while mitigating the power of impulses. Success demands we learn discipline and master that emotional side telling us to hit snooze, that we deserve pizza tonight, or that one episode of Game of Thrones won’t hurt.

Since habits are about consistency, my number one rule is that rules are non-negotiable. If I decide that a habit is worth having, then I must execute, at least until I take the time to objectively re-group and refine these habits. This has served me well, but rigidity can come at a cost.

I’ve also recently explored how

the strength of habits can become their weakness

. Actions can go on autopilot, creating progress even in absence of passion. This is essential for weathering the waxes and wanes in motivation that come with any long-term endeavor. But what about fun and creativity? Fluidity and the ability to auto-regulate keep you in the training game forever. Discipline is training every day. It’s setting the habit; creating structured times and themes to guide your efforts. Life demands discipline in so many arenas. Perhaps we also need the discipline to let go, to play, to flow.

Breathe Some Life Back Into That Routine

We want exercise to be interesting and enriching on its own merit. We exercise to improve how we feel, how we look, and how we interact with the world around us. If you are training for quality of life, remember that variety is the spice of life. Infusing passion and creativity back into your training can be the route to sustained health and joy in movement that breaks down the walls between exercise and life. Perhaps this will even make you a more balanced, healthy human, less prone to the imbalances inherent in extremes.

Say you’re in a rut, and freedom is what you’re craving. What the heck do you do? Break up the daily grind by bringing variety and a playful attitude back to your training. There is so much to try if you are willing to explore the possibilities. To get started, consider:

Reading a book:

  • If you are not typically a lifter, I recommend Dan John’s Easy Strength, if you like to be told what to do, or Never Let Go, if you are interested in a broader survey of lifting wisdom with tons of different, fun training suggestions.
  • If you live in the iron game, I recommend Ultimate Athleticism by Max Shank to jolt you outside the normal sets and reps structure.

Speaking of outside, go outdoors! This alone solves most problems. Take a couple of kettlebells, dumbbells, or sandbags, and have an awesome time rotating between:

  • Loaded Carry Variations
  • Sprints, Hills, and Sled Pushes if you have them
  • Rows
  • Sandbag or Kettlebell Get-Ups
  • Cartwheels, rolls, etc.
  • Crawls
  • Try adding a weekly hike, run, bike, or kayak trip to bring fitness back to life.

Need more variety?

Try the new

Army fitness test

. Its way more fun and applicable than in the past. You have to go to the gym or you won’t do anything? Consider exploring other areas of the facility. Bike, row, join a spin, barbell shred, or a Pilates class. What if fitness was just a game? Find a friend to play tennis or racquetball. This will be fun, varied, and great for keeping your reactions and real-world skills tuned. Allow these games to break up self-imposed mandatory gym times.

Do you need more structure? The idea of just randomly meandering makes you crazy? I understand. For this, I recommend a brain dump of exercises by movement category and protocol. With this basic structure, you can show up and auto-generate a workout every day of the week. Think about what you could do in each of these categories:

Movements:

  • Dynamic
  • Carry
  • Knee dominant/squat
  • Hip dominant/hinge
  • Push
  • Pull
  • Core

Protocols:

  • Tabata, EMOM, super sets, 30sec on / 30sec off, etc.

In my next piece, I will give more guidance on how to construct a varied, auto-regulated program and more clarity in how to auto-regulate from day to day. I’ll show you what a matrix could look like that allows you to quickly shift options from day to day while keeping fitness fun and fresh for a lifetime. You won’t develop world-class strength or tear up the Tour de France on this route, but you’ll maintain a broad spectrum of fitness while enjoying the process. For most people, nothing is more important.

Fight Strength NSFW: Treating Athletes with Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy - Fitness, mixed martial arts, mobility, kinesthetic awareness, flexibility, dynamic stretching, functional movement, podcast, Fight Strength NSFW Podcast

On an all-new edition of Fight Strength NSFW, the show takes a turn into the world of medicine, as it focuses on a treatment that is growing in popularity across the world. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has become a legitimate option for surgery, for many professional athletes and fitness enthusiasts. This week, Florida’s NovaGenix clinic co-founder Tim Bruce joins the show to talk about this unique treatment.

With Phil Daru unavailable as he prepares for an upcoming seminar, regular co-host Jason Burgos had the pleasure of bringing on MMA striking coach Dr. Paul Gavoni as his guest co-host. It was a fitting choice, as Gavoni is the man who introduced Burgos and Daru, laying the groundwork for what would be a podcasting partnership. Burgos and Gavoni got to question the aforementioned Bruce about the work NovaGenix does with its various PRP therapy clients.

The second-degree black belt spoke on why he chose to develop NovaGenix with fellow founder Andy Stock, and the impetus for adding PRP therapy to the various treatments offered at the clinic. Bruce then talked about how the process plays out -- from evaluation to recovery -- why studies on PRP can vary in results, and he told stories on many of the MMA fighters and Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners that have used PRP for their injuries.

Along with interviewing Bruce, a new segment called “In the Corner with Dr. Gloves” was introduced. The segment featured Burgos asking Gavoni questions related to MMA and striking techniques.

The making Of Armani Casa’s Club Bar Cabinet Ocean Laquer requires intense craftsmanship.

Katharine Pooley

When people turn to luxury, elegance and relaxation, rarely are they also thinking of pumping iron and staying fit, and all from the comfort of home, but that is exactly what is possible, says Katharine Pooley of Katharine Pooley Limited (KPL).

The award-winning company’s design vision – “To become an aspiration for the globally elite through an unsurpassable service and an understanding of the ultimate balance between timeless luxury and intelligent design” – speaks to why  fitness and luxury are not mutually exclusive for Pooley.

The wow factor – the bespoke crystal lighting – creates a serene ambience

It is this balance of luxury and intelligence that Pooley says is key to the design of this unique home-gym/fitness/relaxation space. In this case, the sleek area has been designed  to be used mainly for cardiovascular work, weight training, yoga and swimming.

Is Coloro the biggest challenge to Pantone’s dominance of the colour market?

The pool hall area also features a jacuzzi and plunge pool.

“The inspiration for this stunning space, which consists of a pool hall and gym, has been drawn from 5-star hotel indoor pools and gymnasiums visited by KPL within Asia and Europe. Additionally, it creates a cohesive design to suit both the external and internal architecture of the property.” In this case, a private villa or home with views will be the framework.

High-end sprung flooring features a timber-look plank design with inset matting and bronze trims.

Recent trends are also incorporated, says Pooley, who considers herself a trendsetter. These include luxurious spaces that offer multiple uses, and the use of more glamorous finishes applied in a chic, minimal way. “[We’re talking] cleanly veined marbles, polished plasters, poured resins and organic textures like sand plaster timbers and cast bronze.”

It is also an example of a design with  great attention to detail that makes both an aesthetic and functional impact. “The materiality was an important aspect of the overall design look and feel,” Pooley says.

Check and compare: the best new posh hotels in Milan

For example, high-end sprung flooring features a timber-look plank design with inset matting and bronze trims. The light timber veneered joinery features the company’s bespoke design to ensure flexibility so gym accessories would be highlighted with LED lighting strips and easily accessed where necessary or hidden away to maintain the sleek look. The walls are finished with tall mirrored panels with bronze trims and state-of-the-art technology TVs and sound systems.

The inspiration for this stunning space, which consists of a pool hall and gym, has been drawn from 5-star hotel indoor pools and gymnasiums visited by KPL within Asia and Europe

Katharine Pooley

“The lighting was carefully considered throughout to ensure a consistent but functional soft light using a variety of high-specification LED lighting units, lighting strips, niche and directional lighting.” This curated system allows for both flexibility and variety of light settings.

Perhaps the biggest material wow factor, and unexpected element, is the bespoke crystal lighting, including wall lights, that Pooley says is intended to create a serene ambience in the opulent pool area. In terms of a rounded workout the design features cutting-edge gym equipment including treadmills, cross trainers and a rowing machine, as well as separate zones for weight training and yoga. “The spaces are multifunctional, allowing a range of exercising and also pool fitness such as swimming laps and water ballet. The pool hall area also features a jacuzzi and plunge pool for a relaxing cool-down.”

Looking for a lighting revamp? Go bespoke, luxe or smart in Hong Kong

Pooley believes that the space is groundbreaking in terms of the design. “Its design encapsulates both luxury and functionality. Also having been designed to be completely client-oriented it is the ultimate for that client.”

When it comes to it being an ideal gym and fitness facility for the home, she says, “It encapsulates the most top-of-the-range equipment, which will have been specified to meet the client’s requirements, within a luxurious bespoke environment.”

Ultimately, it is curated luxury that’s at the heart of this design, and the concept that any space can be an indulgent place to spend time, even when that time is spent exercising.

BREAKDOWN OF COSTS:

 Architecture & Interior HK$8 million

Engineering HK$2 million

Technology (including equipment) HK$4 million

Other HK$3 million

TOTAL: HK$17 million

Sadio Mane fitness latest

Jürgen Klopp confirmed Sadio Mane has an injury issue and the Liverpool forward will be assessed ahead of Saturday's meeting with Stoke City.

The No.19 missed training on Thursday but, at his pre-match press conference, the manager reported the problem is ‘not that serious’.

“Of course there is something. We will see,” said Klopp when asked for an update on Mane.

“It is not that serious; there is a chance for tomorrow. If we use that chance or not… it is quite early in the day.

“In these times, you always have to use each second and minute, speak to the player, speak to the Doc, speak to the physiotherapists and all that stuff. At the end, you have to make a decision and I will make a decision.”

Morton Gold's Gym owner wants to make fitness fun

Morton Gold's Gym owner wants to make fitness fun

https://ift.tt/2I17DnZ

Andy Kravetz Journal Star public safety reporter @andykravetz

PEORIA — Tom Grims says his goal is to make fitness fun and to make it a way of life for people.

Judging by the number of members at his two Gold's Gym locations, it's pretty clear he's achieved his goal and then some.

Grims, 58, owns the two gyms that he says have transformed the way people in the Peoria area look at fitness. He says the facilities are on the cutting edge and offer the latest in technology for members. But more importantly, he said, they offer patrons camaraderie.

"There are people who come here, 20 or 25 of them, let's say for a 5:30 a.m. spinning class. They are friends and all love working out with each other. It's a family," he said, standing inside one of the studio rooms at his Peoria facility.

It's been 16 years since Grims opened the Morton facility. His route to being a fitness mogul followed working at a car dealership and as a warehouse manager. He knew he liked working out. He knew he liked being in shape, so opening a gym seemed like a good idea. But many gym rats in the area and likely in the nation have dreamed about opening their own gym, to get the equipment they wanted and to do what they thought was right. Grims said he wanted to create something that wasn't here.

"I went to a bunch of different health clubs and gyms and saw that there was something missing here," he said of his beginnings. At the time, the local health club market was dominated by local entities.

The scene, he said, "was stuck" and devoid of a "big name, full service club." So he decided to go with Gold's Gym, a leader in the fitness community since the 1960s. His first store was in Morton, as that's where he lived and there wasn't much in the way of competition. He then expanded into Peoria in 2005 with a conscious effort to blend in. The building, he said, was designed from the inside out to maximize the use of space but also to conform to the way The Shoppes at Grand Prairie looked.

And 13 years later, the Peoria location is going strong. It's 33,000 square feet, two stories and offers an indoor track, full service locker rooms, dedicated work out areas and a juice bar. Grims points to the women's area as a specific example of how things have changed over the years.

"People can go in there and do their own thing. They can go upstairs and use the high intensity training machinery or they go over there to do their own thing," he said, pointing to a spot in the work out area where several people were either balancing on bonzo balls or using kettle bells.

But Gold's Gym, he said, is more than that. It's a way of life for many of his regulars. Right now, one of his biggest demographics are seniors.

"They love coming here, the Silver Sneakers crowd. We have a person who is 92 who works out at the Morton gym. It's a way of life. The hardest part is getting into the door," he said.

Working out, he said, isn't just musclebound oafs grunting and heaving cast iron weights. It's about classes, and he's proud of the variety that his two facilities offer. It's those classes, he said, that offer wider experience to everyone. And for those coach potatoes, they're an excuse-killer.

"If you want to come in and work on your core, we have a 30-minute class. That's just a half hour. Anyone can find time for a half hour," he said.

Equipment, he said, is regularly swapped out when it's damaged or obsolete. There's a child care room, free to members, who are also free to use any Gold's Gym across the nation. Best of all, he said, he hasn't raised his prices since he opened the Peoria location and offers deals or specials every month.

The Dos and Don'ts of Using Cheat Reps for Muscle Gain

The Dos and Don'ts of Using Cheat Reps for Muscle Gain

https://ift.tt/2r6WE1T

Barbell Curl

Cheat reps—that is, getting the weight up with little to no regard to form—can be a useful way to induce more muscular fatigue when doing accessory exercises, like barbell curls or lateral raises.

Muscles need to perform a designated amount of work to yield muscular development, and cheat reps can help you finish reps on a set that was started with precise form. That being said, they shouldn’t be done with compound moves, like deadlifts or back squats. They can cause damage to major joints. Those moves require picture-perfect form for proper muscle recruitment and to minimize joint vulnerability.

Similarly, avoid them on the barbell row, preacher curl, dumbbell pullover, and dips, as a lot of damage can happen from trying to cheat past form.

Form Police

Never cheat on moves like preacher curls (shown above). Doing so could injure your joints, in this case your elbows, as you’re locked in. However, standing barbell cheat curls are fair game.

David Otey, C.S.C.S., is a personal training manager at Equinox Sports Club in New York City.
