The Pullup-Pushup Workout Routine That Can Be Done Anywhere

Army bases, city parks, church gyms, and state prisons are full of guys with wide shoulders, thick backs, and big chests and arms. And if you asked them what they do to achieve this look, you’d always hear the same answer: pullups and pushups. These simple, timeless exercises work the entire upper body and can be performed virtually anywhere. We’ll show you how to take full advantage of these moves, along with some of the most effective variations, to build your back, arms, chest, and shoulders—no weights (or jail time) required. [RELATED1] How it worksWhen you do a pullup, you engage your lats, mid-back, rear delts, biceps, forearms, and core. Pushups train your chest, shoulders, triceps, and core. So between these two movements, you’ve got the whole upper body covered. Another benefit of body-weight training is that it’s low-impact. As a result, you can train more frequently than if you were using heavy weights, and the more often you work out, the greater your potential to build muscle. The only caveat of high-frequency training is the risk of overuse injuries, but you can avoid those by changing up your exercises so you don’t recruit the same muscles the same way every time. That’s why each of the workouts pairs up a different variation of the pullup and pushup. [RELATED2] DirectionsPerform each workout once a week, resting a day between sessions. Perform the exercises marked “A” and “B” in alternating fashion: You’ll do one set of A, rest 1–2 minutes, then one set of B. Rest and repeat until all sets are complete. On days between workouts, you can perform lower-body training. Or squeeze some leg training in after the pullups and pushups on up to three of the workouts we’ve provided. Do not do any additional upper-body training.

Research Shows a Cup of Coffee Ignites the Body's Fat-Fighting Mechanism

Fitness experts have long known the benefits of a daily cup o’ joe, but scientists may have discovered yet another reason to love coffee. Researchers at the University of Nottingham in England recently found that coffee activates the body’s fat-fighting mechanism, known as “brown fat.” That means it could keep you slimmer and stave off diabetes. “The potential implications of our results are pretty big, as obesity is a major health concern for society and we also have a growing diabetes epidemic and brown fat could potentially be part of the solution in tackling them,” professor Michael Symonds, of the University of Nottingham’s School of Medicine, said in a statement on the school’s website. Symonds added that it’s not known whether it's the caffeine or something else in coffee that activates the brown fat. “We are currently looking at caffeine supplements to test whether the effect is similar,” he said in the statement. [RELATED1] There are two types of fat in humans: brown and white. Brown fat—or brown adipose tissue—is responsible for generating body heat and burning calories, whereas white fat is the result of storing too many calories (in other words, the fat you want to get rid of). For the study, nine human subjects were examined through thermal imaging before any exercise or prior caffeine consumption. They then drank a very small cup of coffee (a 65-milligram packet of instant coffee dissolved in 200ml of water, to be exact), and underwent further thermal imaging. The researchers found that coffee made brown fat—mostly found in the neck—hotter, thus accelerating the amount of calories, sugar, and fat burned. The results were found in all subjects, who were described as “healthy” 27 year olds (four men, five women). As we mentioned, it’s not surprising to hear that drinking coffee can help weight loss. But the Nottingham researchers said this particular study is groundbreaking because it’s the first time anyone has been able to find a way to stimulate brown fat in humans. 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin Critiques Fitness Influencer's Beer Chugging Technique
http://bit.ly/2XuK2DT Canadian fitness influencer Amanda Ruller recently posted a photo of her pounding two beers on Twitter and Instagram, next to a photo of the one and only "Stone Cold" Steve Austin chugging some Steveweisers from his WWE heyday.
She asked her followers who they thought did it better, and wouldn’t you know, "Stone Cold" himself responded with his thoughts and gave Amanda a "hell yeah," though he did have some advice for her.
Amanda invited him to drink with her in person, which would be the best beer drinking story of all time.
There you have it, folks. Forget frat houses and tailgates, the real place to get professional beer drinking counsel is from "Stone Cold." Here’s hoping more people take to the Internet to show Steve Austin how they drink two beers at once (even though we’re writing this on a Tuesday morning and chugging beer may be inappropriate. But, it's five o'clock somewhere). [RELATED1] In the meantime, here’s what some Twitter users thought of the comparison and who did it better.

New ‘Female Viagra’ Is FDA-Approved, but the Data Is Shaky

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new drug meant to boostsexual desire in women. It’s been billed as “female Viagra” by multiple sources since the news broke, but Vyleesi (the generic drug name of bremelanotide) actually tackles the issue of sexual dissatisfaction in a very different way than Viagra (sildenafil citrate) does for men. Viagra, first approved by the FDA in 1998, relieves erectile dysfunction by boosting the effects of nitric oxide, which increases blood flow to the penis and helps a man get and maintain an erection, according to theMayo Clinic. In other words, it’s purely physical—Viagra isn’t going to get a man “in the mood.” Vyleesi, on the other hand, is meant to treat a condition known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). The American Sexual Health Association defines HSDD as “the absence of sexual fantasies and thoughts, and/or desire for or receptivity to sexual activity that causes the personal distress or difficulties in her relationship.” The FDA admits that it’s unclear how Vyleesi works exactly; just that it activates melanocortin receptors in the brain, improves sexual desire, and relieves the distress related to a low libido. It’s the second drug to be approved for female sexual dysfunction, with the first being Addyi (flibanserin) in 2015. Also meant to raise women’s overall libido, Addyi has a few drawbacks, including the commitment to take a pill every day and potentially serious complications when it’s combined with alcohol. Vyleesi is an injection, which isn’t great for those uncomfortable with needles, but it only needs to be taken before sex. It’s also safe to use it with alcohol, according to the New York Times. [RELATED1] The drug was studied in two 24-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, including 1,247 premenopausal women struggling with HSDD. About 25 percent of the participants self-reported increased sexual desire while using Vyleesi, compared to 17 percent of the placebo group. About 35 percent reported less personal distress, compared to 31 percent in the placebo group. Forty percent of the participants reported nausea, especially with the first injection. It’s also not recommended for women with high blood pressure. Critics have voiced concerns that the drug hasn’t been scrutinized enough. “It is unfortunate that the FDA decided to approve this drug despite the skimpy peer-reviewed data and complete lack of long-use safety information,” Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Health Research, told the Washington Post. “The good news is that it doesn’t need to be taken every day, the way Addyi does. The bad news is that the public can’t have confidence in the safety of the drug because we don’t have access to long-term safety information about it.” Some are also questioning the way the drug is meant to work. A low libido is a complicated issue, and HSDD is an issue that’s mostly promoted by the very companies that produce the drugs meant to “fix” it. Either way, the FDA moved forward with the drug’s approval, so we’ll find out in time whether it’s the female libido booster it’s billed to be. For the FDA’s part, it aims to help women address the concerns that come along with HSDD. “There are women who, for no known reason, have reduced sexual desire that causes marked distress, and who can benefit from safe and effective pharmacologic treatment. Today’s approval provides women with another treatment option for this condition,” Hylton V. Joffe, M.D., M.M.Sc., director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research’s Division of Bone, Reproductive and Urologic Products, said in a statement. “As part of the FDA’s commitment to protect and advance the health of women, we’ll continue to support the development of safe and effective treatments for female sexual dysfunction.” [RELATED2]
