Lifting weights can help boost mental health and banish anxiety
http://ift.tt/2foNrMO Guys don't usually like to talk about having anxiety or other kinds of mental issues, but they sure love to talk about how big their biceps are, or how many squats they did at the gym. When athletes talk about how exercising helps improve their mental state, it's usually coming from runners. But here's the thing: Hitting the gym might actually help you build a better body and improve your mental health. [RELATED1] Resistance exercise can reduce symptoms of anxiety in healthy adults and adults who have mental illness like anxiety, according to a recent review of multiple research studies published in the journal Sports Medicine. When researchers analyzed 16 studies that covered more than 900 people, they found that lifting was associated with a considerable drop in anxiety symptoms that was comparable to medication or psychotherapy. The effects were most pronounced in healthy individuals, but it didn’t matter what the subjects’ sex was or what kind of resistance exercises were done, researchers said. Yes: Now dudes who lift can also brag about how their time sweating under iron is making them feel better, too. So if you’ve been skipping the gym lately and have been feeling down, or just want to start lifting weights to improve your mood and mental health, check these simple workouts specifically tailored for the beginner: [RELATED2] [RELATED3] [RELATED4] Fitness via Men's Fitness http://ift.tt/Jz6nE4 September 26, 2017 at 02:31PM

Former Arsenal star Stefan Schwarz sheds 40 pounds, transforms body
http://ift.tt/2hx7UQh If you bumped into former pro footballer Stefan Schwarz on the street in 2017, you might not recognize him. The 48-year-old has completely transformed his body, dropping more than 40lbs to go from flabby to absolutely ripped. [RELATED1] The former Arsenal player and Sunderland captain has been using the “16 Weeks of Hell” program from his trainer Tony Andersson, and the results have been impressive. Schwarz posted a photo on Instagram showing his progress over the last three months:
Schwarz wrote on Instagram that he’s been using power walking as a daily exercise--sometimes walking up to six miles per day—and showed off some of the other moves he’s been doing:
Schwarz isn’t the only European athlete to get shredded after retiring from his sport. Former cricket player Chris Tremlett also underwent a stunning change, going from around 190lbs to more than 270lbs. Tremlett bulked up with dumbbell workouts, squats, legs raises, and deadlifts, making his 6’7” frame look even more massive. Check out his transformation: [RELATED2] Schwarz still has one more month to go with the program, so chances are he could be even more jacked by the time he’s finished. To live a longer and healthier life, just get sweating for a few hours a week
http://ift.tt/2xDmZsN If you want to be ripped and cause a minor commotion at the pool when your take off your shirt, then you need to put in a lot of time at the gym and create a diet that’s high in lean protein and low in processed carbs and sugar. Getting swole and diced is a lifestyle, but most people don’t have the time or motivation (or genes) to look like a fitness model. Most people do have the time, however, to exercise enough to improve their health. [RELATED1] You don’t even have to put that much time into your activities each week to confer a benefit. Just meet the minimum recommendation of 30 minutes a day or 150 minutes a week and you’ll reduce your risk of an early death from any cause by a whopping 28%, according to new research from McMaster University in Canada. And that goes for any type of movement that is physical: mowing the lawn, mopping the floor, or hitting the treadmill. "By including low- and middle-income countries in this study, we were able to determine the benefit of activities such as active commuting, having an active job, or even doing housework," said lead study author Scott Lear, M.D., a professor of Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Health Sciences. "Going to the gym is great, but we only have so much time we can spend there. If we can walk to work, or at lunch time, that will help too." The study found that if everyone was active for at least 150 minutes per week, about 8% of early deaths of more than seven years could be averted. Meeting the guidelines also lowered risk of heart disease by 20%, and showed that 750 minutes of quick walking a week dropped all-cause early mortality by 36%. Want to make sure your little swimmers are strong? Keep the pounds off.
http://ift.tt/2yre1wh Need one more reason you should consistently exercise and eat healthily? Well, if you care about the vitality of your sperm, then keeping active and at a normal bodyweight should be tops on your list: A new study has shown that being fat and having strong swimmers is not very compatible. [RELATED1] In the study, which was recently published in the journal Andrologia, scientists researched 1,285 men, and found that the obese guys had poor sperm quality. We're talking lower volume, lower sperm count, lower sperm concentration, and an uptick in defects. Sperm from obese men also tended to have a harder time quickly navigating through the female reproductive organs. To be fair, this isn't necessarily surprising. Obesity has long been known to affect the fertility of women since it can affect ovulation and menstruation, increase the risk of miscarriage, and make it tougher for fertility treatments to work. Obesity's effects on men, however, had been less clear. "The health and reproductive performance of spermatozoa in obese men are more likely to be compromised both qualitatively and quantitatively" as a result of obesity, said lead study author Gottumukkala Ramaraju, M.D., from the Center for Assisted Reproduction at the Krishna IVF Clinic, in Visakhapatnam, India. "Results from our present dataset suggest that efforts focusing on male weight loss before conception are warranted for couples seeking infertility treatment." Saquon Barkley is the strongest RB in college football. Here are the lifts to prove it.
http://ift.tt/2y4zWNH
Matthew JussimToday
There’s almost nothing that can stop Penn State star Saquon Barkley. The running back and leading Heisman candidate has been called one of the best football prospects in a “decade” by some scouts, and he proved exactly why against the Iowa Hawkeyes in PSU's fourth game of the season. [RELATED1] Barkley was all over the field for the Nittany Lions, getting it done on the ground, through the air, and in the return game to help lead the 21-19 victory. Barkley put up a career best 211 rushing rushing yards; a Penn State record of 358 all-purpose yards (combined rushing, receiving, and return yards); and set a career-high with 12 receptions. But that’s not all. Barkley showed his unique tandem of strength and athleticism by leaping over an Iowa defender—getting hit midair—and then managing to keep going on the play to gain more yards. Then, with the game on the line, Barkley pulled off the key block for quarterback Trace McSorley—on the final play of the game—stopping a blitzing Iowa linebacker to give McSorley time to throw the winning touchdown.
So, yeah, Barkley’s a pretty good player. [RELATED2] While it’s clear Barkley has a ridiculous amount of natural ability, the reason he’s being talked about like a potential top overall NFL draft pick is the hard work he puts in off the field. In June 2017, Barkley set a Penn State weight room record with a 405-pound power clean, and he regularly turns heads with his massive, eye-popping lifts in the weight room. Here are three times Barkley crushed massive weight in the gym. Fitness via Men's Fitness http://ift.tt/Jz6nE4 September 25, 2017 at 05:24PM
What's a younger-looking hairstyle that's still professional and put-together?
http://ift.tt/2xsNTnX Well, even Stephen Colbert himself is wearing his hair a little looser these days, right? So I’d say do what he’s doing now and start growing it out a little bit. Let it get a little bit longer on the sides (not over the ears), with some scissor work on the sides and looser on the top. Then, to style it: When you get out of the shower, towel-dry it, then either finger it over or use a wide-tooth comb to create a part that’s not so hard and defined. [RELATED1] Next, you can: 1) let it naturally dry and loosen up a bit, then apply your styling product, or 2) make sure it’s nice and dry, put the product in, then finger it through with your hands so you have that not-so-tight look. And you don’t want to look like you just pulled your head out of an oil bath, right? So use a cream-based product, like Malin+Goetz styling cream; Fatboy Perfect Putty or its pomade, which isn’t too shiny; or the freeform cream by Imperial. There’s not a real name for the look—the “loose pomp,” maybe? It’s similar to the way you’re doing your hair now, but you’re styling it so it’s not coming out so flat and close to your skull. Are gummy vitamins healthy?
http://ift.tt/2wPxf2u Short answer: Gummies kinda suck. First: “An average gummy has 2g sugar,” says nutritionist Andy Bellatti. Not so bad, right? “But we eat too much sugar now, why add more?” he adds. Worse, because gummies contain extra fillers like artificial flavors and colors there’s less room for actual vitamins. [RELATED1] So, to get the 1,000mg of vitamin C that’s in one regular vitamin, for example, you could end up taking eight gummies. Gummies can also cost up to seven to eight times as much as old-fashioned vitamins; so all in all, it’s a bum deal. If it’s the only way you’ll take your pills, fine. But we say candy’s not dandy.
