Why Does This Dude Have a Sword at the Gym?
https://ift.tt/2IrpO7E Men grunting under that bench press, deadlifting to hit that next PR, and burning away on that "fancy" workout machine—none are a match for this guy and his sword. Perhaps practicing his survival skills, this guy was captured on Twitter full-on sword fighting while on an elliptical, treadmill, and bench. He swipes and stabs that sword like a pro, which might some regular gym goers might find odd, especially when there's "real" equipment around. But honestly, who would tell this guy that his "workout" is crazy when you see the way he's swinging that thing around—talk about multitasking at the gym! Still, it does beg the question, "What is he training for?"

Does Apple Cider Vinegar Help With Weight Loss?
https://ift.tt/2BI7Rfp

Pucker up. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) may be part of the secret to losing some of those extra pounds—and clearing up hair, skin, and teeth too—but it's important to know some of the facts before spritzing, brushing, and downing the vinegar on a daily basis. Nowadays, ACV is consumed with the expectation that it will miraculously reveal that six-pack or burn away any remaining gut hanging around. Dieters and bodybuilders have used ACV on a regular basis to keep weight gain in check—some even downing a shot of the acidic liquid daily. The truth is, ACV does have health benefits, but consuming it every day like clockwork may not be the answer to all your weight loss woes. ACV has acetic acid, and when consumed it can work as an appetite suppressant. If taken with starchy foods, for example, ACV can actually help stabilize your blood sugar levels, making you less likely to crave the sweet stuff. "Ultimately, our appetite is really important to pay attention to," Abbey Sharp, dietitian and blogger at Abbey’s Kitchen, told M&F. "Most of us have really ruined our relationship with food simply by silencing these innate cues. If your body is telling you you’re hungry, you really should be listening to it, not trying to artificially manipulate its messages." A study from Arizona State University found that people at-risk for type 2 Diabetes who consumed ACV at meals kept their insulin levels in check and had 34 percent lower glucose post-meal. Another study led by the university tested a group of people with type 2 diabetes. The subjects consumed two tablespoons of ACV before bed*, which lowered their blood sugar levels by four to six percent by the morning. Sharp, who documented her own battle with an eating disorder in her book, "Mindful Glow Cookbook," said that the few ACV studies currently available have shown modest results and are short-lived, so it's not known if the weight loss is sustainable after regular use of the vinegar. "Research has shown that when taken consistently, adding ACV to our regime may result in you eating a bit less because it seems to increase satiety, or make you feel nauseous which may result in you eating less—though that seems like a really terrible way to live your life just for an extra pound or two lost," Sharp said. "Personally, unless there were other major changes in one’s diet, exercise or lifestyle in general, I don’t believe anyone would see substantial weight loss from any amount of ACV use." Dating back centuries, vinegar has always served its purpose—even as a disinfectant in the early days before real medicine—but this doesn’t mean that a tablespoon or two a day of the apple version will keep the fat away. In one Japanese study, 175 overweight subjects drank one to two tablespoons of ACV every day for 12 weeks straight. Following the 12-week trial, the individuals lost an average of three pounds, then gained it back within a month following the study. So, ACV does work, but you would have to drink it every day for months in order to see substantial weight loss, according to the study. Switchel.jpg

Some studies are more far-fetched when it comes to ACV, including one claim that vinegar can help cure cancer. "I’ve heard that it fixes spit ends in your hair, but to my knowledge, no one has gone and studied that specifically," said Sharp. "I think a lot of people believe that just adding a shot of ACV to their morning will help fat just melt away. That’s absolutely not how it works." Today, ACV has been known to serve as a dandruff remedy by changing the pH balance of your scalp making it difficult for yeast to grow. "Some people claim that ACV is rich in vitamin C and B, and may contains alpha-hydroxy acid, so it could potentially help exfoliate scalp skin and reduce dandruff," Sharp said. "However, while apples are rich in vitamin C and alpha hydroxy, evidence suggests there are no detectable amounts in the vinegar. At the end of the day, there are currently no studies to support the rich vitamin amount in ACV and whether it can act as a remedy for dandruff." It has even been used as a teeth-whitening agent when paired with baking soda, but there is very little research to back up these claims, according to Sharp. "Much of the research on using baking soda has only been completed on dental products that contain baking soda, so it’s still unclear whether baking soda alone or in combination with vinegar actually works," said Sharp. "What we do know, however, is that using ACV alone can eat away at our enamel and cause serious damage to our teeth." That's because ACV is an acid, and prolonged use over time can start to chip away** at your tooth enamel, Overall, ACV does have vitamin C, calcium, iron, folate, B vitamins, magnesium, and potassium and can be consumed as part of a daily diet. When using ACV, always opt for one that is organic and unpasteurized, since the pasteurization process can remove any of the vinegar's health benefits. Sharp recommends adding apple cider vinegar in salad dressings and marinades. More palatable than being diluted in water as a drink, ACV can be infused into a soothing hot toddy or a switchel, a 19th century farmer's drink of ginger, vinegar, and sweetener that originated in the Caribbean, in addition to baked goods and sauces. "If you’re a fan of sour things, apple cider vinegar, particularly an unfiltered AVC is a great addition to the diet," Sharp said. "But I don’t think we need to be going taking shots of it which can irritate our digestive tract and damage tooth enamel." *Arizona State University Study - ACV Before Bed **Vinegar's Impact on Tooth Decay [RELATED1]

Become a Blazing Fast Runner
https://ift.tt/2T5SreQ There is no doubt that if a runner regularly hits the hills, they get stronger, more powerful, and ultimately faster. I am all about speed! However, you should vary the structure of your hill program throughout the season. Since hill work is stressful, adaptation, progression, and periodization are of the utmost importance. A healthy dose of hill running can be a valuable component of your weekly training program.
Outdoor Versus IndoorThe answer to the age-old question of outdoor hill training or treadmill hills is that they both have their place in a good running plan. The advantage of running on a treadmill is that you can dial in your workout specifications precisely, there is reduced impact, and you can focus on your running form. If you are trying to keep your heart rate down during base training, you simply select a speed that keeps your heart rate in your desired zone.
Treadmill hill workouts allow you to adjust the pace and incline to create just the right amount of stress for your workout. It may be hard to find a very long hill with a steady incline in your area, but the treadmill can create the terrain you need. It is important to not start off your hill program with too steep of an incline, as your body may not be ready for it. With the treadmill, you can record and progress the incline slightly each week. The resistance on a treadmill remains constant, which is important for building muscular endurance.
Hill Training ProgressionsAn important component of the base period is training your aerobic energy system. This means sustaining lower intensities. Hills will obviously drive your heart rate up but that does not mean you should eliminate hill work during base season. In fact, this is the best time to build sport-specific strength. As your season progresses, intensity and specificity should follow along. The following workouts are in order of progression.
Hills Will Benefit YouRemember that hill work is a combination of strength and power training and you must let your body acclimate gradually and recover in between workouts. If you experience any calf or Achilles area pain, stop immediately and take a few days off. Do your self-care to manage the pain and recover quickly. Do not resume training until you are pain-free. In between your hill training workouts on the treadmill do not run on an incline for your longer runs as it can increase your injury risk.
Well-planned hill work will help prevent injury and strengthen your tendons, joints, and ligaments, but only if the stress load is not too much too soon. Overall fitness cannot be rushed and hill work is no exception.

Data Stolen From MyFitnessPal App and Other Services
https://ift.tt/2NkrUVO

User information was stolen from 16 popular apps and services and is being sold on the dark web, according to a report in the UK’s The Register. The breach released more than 617 million user accounts to a seller on the dark web, Dream Market, who offered the login details for less than $20,000 in Bitcoin. Apps affected by this breach include MyFitnessPal, HauteLook, Dubsmash, My Heritage, ShareThis, Animotos, BookMat, EyeEM, 8fit, Whitepages, Fotolog, 500px, Armor Games, Coffee Meets Bagel, DataCamp and Artsy. Of the apps impacted by the breach, several have millions of user accounts; Dubsmash, which has 162 users, and MyFitnessPal, which has 151 million, according to the report, have the most accounts that have been compromised in this breach. Information breached includes account holder names, email addresses, and passwords, in addition to social media authentication tokens, location or other personal details, depending on the site. No payment or banking information was available in the sales listings, according to the report. Websites, including MyHeritage, MyFitnessPal, and Animoto, disclosed this breach to customers last year, the report said, but the additional companies were newly hacked. A spokesman for MyFitnessPal told The Register that they asked users to reset their passwords following the breach last year. "We responded swiftly to alert users and have since required all MyFitnessPal users who had not changed their passwords since that March 29, 2018 announcement, to reset their passwords," said Erin Wendell, spokesperson for MyFitnessPal. "As a result, passwords previously used for MyFitnessPal at the time of the date security issues are no longer valid on MyFitnessPal, and we continue to encourage strong password practices, including unique and complex passwords for all their accounts to enable users to further protect themselves." Any buyer would have to crack the encryption to gain access to these password-protected accounts. In order to use any of these accounts, the buyer would have to be cracked before they can be used, which can be done at times by using older email addresses from prior breaches. Users who have accounts with any of the affected services should change their password, if they haven’t already.

Chris Hemsworth is set to portray Hulk Hogan in an upcoming biopic directed by Todd Phillips (Joker, Hangover trilogy). The biopic, which will also unite Phillips with Joker-co-writer Scott Silver—along with writer John Pollono—won’t focus on Hogan’s entire life but on his early days in the Florida state wrestling circuit through his rise in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and the origins of Hulkamania in the 1980s. Terry Gene Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan) was the face of the WWF in the 1980s and beyond, from his famous bouts with Andre the Giant and Randy “Macho Man” Savage to his later returns to the WWE. The project is reportedly in its final stages of a deal with Netflix. The film is being produced by Eric Bischoff and Hemsworth, in addition to Phillips and Bradley Cooper, under their banner Joint Effort, and Michael Sugar, under his Netflix-based Sugar23. We're sure Hemsworth, who recently launched a new fitness app, will work on bulking up more for the Hogan film. For now, you can catch him when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26.

Ankle Mobility - Training Inside Out
https://ift.tt/2IuA6E5 It's been a while since I posted but to get back into the swing things in 2019, I am going to kick it off big with a series of instructional articles and videos starting with an often overlooked topic - ankle mobility. The videos below were created with Wade Maselich, our PT at Precision CrossFit, my gym in Agoura Hills, California.
The first thing I want to touch on is the notion of training from the inside out rather than from the outside in. As a coach, in my personal programming, I focus a ton on stability muscles. I focus a ton on thoracic strength, and I focus a ton on the posterior chain. If those muscles are strong, the athlete's going to be a better, stronger athlete. Most athletes focus too much on the primary muscles meaning legs, quads, hamstrings, big muscle groups and not on the smaller muscle groupings. That tends to be an issue.
The Protocols of Being BetterFor example, in my training programs, I spend a lot of time during the time allocated for workouts going through skill-building and mobility work. Basically, I work on things like rotator cuff muscles and what is now trendily known as crossover symmetry. I work with athletes on stability, something that Wade and I have talked about a lot.
I pride myself on having emphasized stability work for many years but you can't blame the gym or other coaches if this is a relatively new thing for most people. People come into a gym, particularly a CrossFit gym, and they want to get stronger and lift heavier as soon as possible. There's a sense of urgency. In the video below, Wade and I are going to talk about these issues and provide some background on how athletes need to approach inside out training, starting with ankle mobility and why it is so important. Take a few minutes to listen or watch the discussion before jumping into the instructional video that follows.
We are going to talk about how athletes in competitive situations face ankle mobility issues. We will relate that to the average gym goer and then really try on zero in on ways to reduce the risk of injury.
Testing for Mobility and Fixing Your WeaknessesThere's no easy way to talk about mobility, the things you should look for, and how you go about addressing your own personal issues. It's much easier to demonstrate. So, just dive into the instructional video below. I think Wade and I have managed to cover your ankle mobility from every angle and we've kept it simple, and safe. It's really important to realize that a lot of this kind of inside out training is not only designed to help you move better but to avoid taking on injuries as you invariably push yourself to try and get stronger and better.
Taking the weightlifting snatch as a guidepost, ankle mobility plays a crucial role in determining how far you progress in your practice of this unique strength movement. Your ankles play a key part in determining whether the rest of your bother will align right in order to be able to get you into the deep catch positions that a snatch demands.
Keep an eye out for more upcoming instructionals in the coming weeks or just click on the word tag Tromello Instructionals to pull them all up.
