Teens are smoking weed and vaping more than ever—but they're quitting cigs, too

Discarded Cigarette

E-cigarettes are a divisive topic. Some studies show they're a healthier alternative to tobacco products, while others indicate they can increase your risk for lung disease.

Regardless of your stance, though, there's no denying that e-cigarettes are more popular than ever--especially among middle- and high-school students, based on new data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

More than 27% of young adults reported vaping in 2016, and daily marijuana use also increased. Cigarette-smoking, however, is on the decline—cigarette use decreased among high-school seniors in particular, according to the 2017 "Monitoring the Future" survey from the National Institutes of Health.

In the survey, researchers asked students in the eighth, 10th, and 12th grades whether they had used any type of electronic vaporizer in the past year, and asked them to specify whether they were vaping nicotine, marijuana, or just the flavored "vape juice". A large chunk of the students said they were vaping nicotine. Incidentally, this and other recent studies suggest that vaping nicotine could increase the likelihood of moving on to regular cigarette-smoking in the future.

Despite this, though, cigarette-smoking as a whole is down to just over 4% among high-school seniors—a dramatic drop from the 24.6% when cigarette use was at its peak in 1997. Daily marijuana use, on the other hand, is up to almost 6% from its lowest point in 1992, when only 1.9% of 12th graders reported smoking weed.

Just like e-cigarettes, the effects of marijuana on the body are controversial and still being researched, with results falling on both sides of the fence. Still, there are certain weed myths that fit guys can ignore—and even ways it can help improve your workout.
