More Women Turn to Marijuana for Morning Sickness

More Women Turn to Marijuana for Morning Sickness

https://ift.tt/2N7vt3Q

Aug. 31, 2018 -- Pregnant women with mild or severe morning sickness were significantly more likely to have used marijuana during pregnancy than women without these symptoms, according to a new study published this month.

The study of women in California found that a growing number of pregnant women are using marijuana, but those with severe nausea and vomiting in their first trimester were nearly four times more likely to use it during this time than those who didn’t have morning sickness.

The study of more than 220,000 pregnancies from 2009 through 2016 found overall use at 5.3% in the first trimester. That number spiked to 11.3% for pregnant women with severe nausea and vomiting. Just over 8% of the women with mild nausea and vomiting used pot while pregnant.

Women said on questionnaires that they used marijuana and were given a urine test when they were 8 weeks pregnant.

“Our findings add important evidence to a small but growing body of research suggesting that some pregnant women may use marijuana to self-medicate morning sickness,” said the study’s lead author, Kelly Young-Wolff, PhD, a research scientist with Kaiser Permanente’s Division of Research in Northern California.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) discourages women from using marijuana if they plan to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

In a statement responding to the study, the organization says “worrisome trends” in studies show that marijuana -- whether smoked or ingested -- may disrupt normal brain development in fetuses, resulting in shorter attention spans and behavioral problems in children. The CDC, too, says that while smoking marijuana transmits dangerous chemicals through the smoke, edible marijuana, found in brownies, candies, and other foods, is just as much of a problem.

Many women who use marijuana may think it’s relatively safe. But when smoked, it contains many of the same carcinogens as tobacco smoke, often in higher concentrations. The ACOG also warned that other issues may come from the increasing potency of marijuana, which is now legally sold for medicinal or recreational use in more than two dozen states, with more joining their ranks every year.

The association says previous studies have shown that children who were exposed to marijuana in their mother’s womb had lower scores on tests of visual problem solving, hand-eye coordination, and visual analysis than children who were not exposed to marijuana in utero. Prenatal marijuana exposure has been tied to attention deficit and behavioral problems. These children are also more likely to use marijuana as teenagers.

Young-Wolff said the perception that marijuana is harmless has been rising as more states legalize it. She cited a study done in Colorado that found that nearly 70% of marijuana dispensaries recommended marijuana to treat morning sickness.

“Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean that it’s safe, especially in pregnant women,” she says. “It’s important for people to realize that people who work in marijuana dispensaries are not medical professionals. We really recommend that pregnant women with nausea and vomiting talk to their doctors and don’t use marijuana.”

The study didn’t look at whether pregnant women smoked marijuana or ingested edibles.

“That’s something we hope to look at in the future,” she said.

Young-Wolff was one the writers of an editorial saying more data is needed on the health effects of marijuana use during pregnancy and on mothers and their children.

“An urgent need exists to understand the effects of prenatal marijuana exposure because it may continue to rise in conjunction with the growing acceptance, accessibility, and spread of legalization in the United States,” she wrote.

Fearlessness: How to Stop Running from Space

Fearlessness: How to Stop Running from Space

https://ift.tt/2Pm5piO

We spend our days filling in every available space, cramming in more tasks, responding to messages, checking social media and online sites, watching videos.

We are afraid of empty space in our lives.

The result is often a continual busyness, constant distraction and avoidance, lack of focus, lack of satisfaction with our lives.

We run from silence. We run from the spaces between tasks and appointments. We run from solitude and stillness. We try to fill every second with activity, with something useful, as if silence and space are not valuable.

But what are we afraid of?

And who would we be if we didn’t have that fear?

We’re afraid of space and stillness and silence because it highlights the uncertainty, instability, groundlessness, insecurity, shakiness that lie underneath every second of our lives. We’re afraid of having to face this instability and uncertainty, of having to feel the fear of it.

Without the fear of all of the uncertainty that is highlighted by space … we become free.

I know in my life, when I allow myself to have stillness, silence, solitude, simplicity and space … it leaves room to face whatever is coming up for me. It gives me room to fully feel any feelings that I’ve been avoiding. It allows me to be more honest with myself, instead of using distractions and busyness to cover up what I don’t want to see.

And in the end, I develop trust that the space is not something to be feared, but rather something to be treasured. A gift, filled with learning and not knowing and shakiness and beauty.

You might try allowing more space to be in your day, without filling it:

  • Take some time between tasks for stillness.
  • Sit out in nature, in silence, without technology.
  • When you notice yourself reaching for your phone, pause. See if you can just be still, just savor some space.
  • When you feel uncertainty or instability in your life (hint: it’s always there), let yourself feel it. Be present with it, without needing to run or avoid.
  • When you feel fear, be open-hearted with it and allow yourself fully feel it, being friendly with it. Your relationship with fear will change if you become friendly with it.
  • Do less, and trust that things won’t fall apart. Or if they do fall apart, you can be present with that instability.
  • When you’re in line, driving, eating, walking, exercising … see if you can do those things in silence, without technology, without needing to do something “useful.” Find the value in these spaces.
  • Notice who you are without the fear of space.

Savor these spaces, their deliciousness. Savor the groundlessness, as something filled with freedom if we learn not to fear it. Be present with the fear and uncertainty, as good friends not as enemies.

Let your heart be open raw tender and vulnerable, and your mind embracing the spaciousness of the vast blue sky of open awareness.

On a High-Fat Diet to Lose Weight? It Might Actually Prevent You From Feeling Full

On a High-Fat Diet to Lose Weight? It Might Actually Prevent You From Feeling Full

https://ift.tt/2N2fHqX

One of the benefits of eating a high-fat, low-carb diet - besides the weight loss - is that fat is a satiating macronutrient. Loading up on healthy monounsaturated fats such as avocados, nuts, and olive oil keeps you feeling satisfied until your next meal. But a new study suggests that eating high-fat foods actually blocks the brain from letting it know it's time to stop eating.

The research, published in Science Translational Medicine, found that mice that were fed a high-fat diet produce a hormone called MMP-2 that clips receptors for the hormone leptin in the brain, according to the EurekAlert release. Often referred to as the satiety hormone, leptin's job is to inform the brain that you have enough fat stored and are sated. Since MMP-2 blocks leptin from binding to its receptors, your brain doesn't get the signal that your stomach is full and you should stop eating. Researchers believe this mechanism explains a condition called leptin resistance, which is common among obese patients but isn't well understood. They also found when MMP-2 is blocked, the leptin can still signal when the stomach is full.

It's important to note that this study was conducted in mice, not humans. The type of fat the mice were fed also wasn't specified in the press release, whether it was healthy fats including monounsaturated fats or unhealthier ones such as saturated or trans fats. While scientists are continuing to study the phenomenon of leptin resistance, they are hoping for a clinical trial to test if MMP-2 blockers could actually help people lose weight.

In the meantime, check with your doctor or registered dietitian before making any major dietary changes. High-fat diets, such as the keto diet, should be done under medical supervision.

Stress Was Destroying My Health - Here's How I Stopped It

Stress Was Destroying My Health - Here's How I Stopped It

https://ift.tt/2N4z4zG

Checking into the emergency room, alone in my pajamas with tears streaming down my face . . . that should have been my low point. My wake-up call. I'm in my late 20s, but I felt that childlike, paralytic helplessness that morning, like I needed my mom.

This wasn't the first health scare I'd experienced in the past year, and it definitely wasn't the last; I had been in and out of doctor's offices and urgent cares with a slew of inexplicable physical ailments for several months. Despite being a fitness and health editor and "doing all the right things," according to many a health practitioner, I was deteriorating. Drastically. To make matters worse, my mental health was tanking and in a seriously dangerous place.

Why would someone who does all the right things be in such poor physical health?

Unfortunately, that hospital visit wasn't enough to get me to stop everything and reevaluate. I didn't hit the proverbial "panic button" until I started having dissociative panic attacks months later. Not to be too lighthearted, but at that point, finally, Gretchen Weiners had cracked.

Why would someone who exercises five to seven days a week, eats healthy foods, goes to acupuncture and physical therapy, uses essential oils and meditates, and - as mentioned - does all the right things be in such poor physical health? Perhaps you find yourself nodding along, and if you're anything like me, the culprit may be simpler than you'd think: stress.

I know, I know - everyone has stress! But that isn't a reason to ignore it and let it build up. If you do that for too long, it can sabotage your body and brain. I joke a lot about my situation, and hyperbolic humor is among my favorite coping mechanisms, but I mean it when I say that stress was killing me. It manifested in chronic illness, mysterious pains and ailments, severe depression and anxiety, and panic disorder.

Fast forward four months to today, and I couldn't be further from that place. I feel like I was reborn; I wake up feeling excited, feeling joy, and feeling hope for the first time in a long time. My ailments are all but gone. I show no markers in my blood of the chronic illness I once battled. The debilitating depression and anxiety have disappeared, and I haven't had a single panic attack in months. So how did I get here? I like to think of it as a three-pronged process, with the first being the most important. I could write a book describing it in its entirety, but here's the gist.

This Is How Venus and Serena Williams Feel About Playing Each Other at the US Open

It's time to get caught up on all the 2018 US Open action. First, Simona Halep, the number one seed, lost in the very first round. The French Open banned Serena Williams's catsuit; she later rocked an Off-White x Nike ensemble fit for the queen she is in black and purple. And, on top of all of that, Alizé Cornet received a court violation for unsportsmanlike conduct because she adjusted her shirt.

As if the US Open couldn't get any more exciting, last night Serena defeated Carina Witthöft in the second round, advancing to the third round, where she'll face off with her big sister Venus sooner than expected in the tournament. Ahead of one of the most anticipated meetups, Venus spoke to POPSUGAR about how she prepares for tournaments and what it has been like competing against her sister for the past 20 years. "We're sisters through the whole match," she said. "That never stops."

During last night's press conference, Serena echoed those sentiments. "We make each other better; we bring out the best when we play each other. It's what we do," she said.

When asked what the toughest part emotionally is playing Venus, she replied, "I never root against her no matter what . . . when you always want someone to win, to have to beat them . . . that's the hardest part."

Venus and Serena will compete tomorrow in Flushing Meadow, NY. The time is TBD.

It sounds like your mom's golden advice: you should eat three meals a day to be healthy. Proponents of eating three meals a day claim it can regulate blood sugar and is better for overall health. But others claim eating five smaller meals, or three moderate meals and two small snacks, a day is actually more beneficial for appetite control and weight loss. So which one is it? An Exclusive Workout to Accentuate Curves and Sculpt Muscle Straight From Rihanna's Trainer

https://ift.tt/2ooDkvW

Rihanna has been my girl crush since she released her debut album, Music of the Sun in 2005. So, naturally, when I got the opportunity to do a one-on-one session with her trainer Dede Lagree at Form50 in New York, I felt that much closer to being best friends with the Bad Gal herself.

The Lagree Fitness Method is loved by celebrities like Meghan Markle, Ashley Graham, and Viola Davis. As someone who always works out - my favorite training modalities are weightlifting and sprinting - I can vouch that the Lagree Method is no joke. The infamous slow tempo of a megaformer class certainly challenges your balance and stability, causing your muscles to quiver hours after your workout is over.

In a recent interview for the British Vogue September issue, Rihanna said that although she's ready to start working out again, with one caveat: she doesn't want to lose her butt, hips, and thighs. This at-home Lagree workout, using sliders to mimic the motion of the megaformer, will do the exact opposite, as it's all about strengthening the legs, booty, and abs to accentuate your curves.

The Workout

Do one set of each exercise listed below, taking little rest as you transition between exercises. Take 90 seconds to two minutes of rest in between each round, completing a total of four rounds.

  • Plank to pike: 12 reps
  • Bear: 12 reps
  • Elevator lunges: 12 reps each leg
  • Side lunge: 12 reps

If you want a taste of what it's like to train like Rihanna, grab a towel or a pair of sliders, and get ready to build that cake, cake, cake, cake!
